I can’t begin to describe how Crossfit Carrboro has changed my life but I can say that I am the fittest I have ever been.

– Adam VanSlyke

I have been active and played sports my whole life but as I reached my early 30’s I had become bored with my fitness routine. That all changed one day when a friend dragged me into his garage gym and made me do the WOD “Cindy”; immediately I was hooked. While working out with him over the next few weeks I become obsessed with Crossfit and joined Crossfit Carrboro a month later. I can’t begin to describe how Crossfit Carrboro has changed my life but I can say that I am the fittest I have ever been.  Crossfit has made me a faster runner, a better cyclist, a stronger rock climber, and a happier person. I love our unique and diverse community at CFC and I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back by coaching our amazing athletes.

Having a community that truly cares and I am accountable to has made a huge difference in my life and my level of fitness.

– Pete Stone

By the time I was 43, I had trained for body building, run long distances and cross trained, never finding the results I was looking for. After my son was born in 2009, I stopped working out because of sleepless nights and the exhaustion of new parenthood. I gained 20 pounds and was in terrible shape.

My wife saw a Groupon for a CrossFit boot camp and I enrolled in the class and instantly I was hooked. CrossFit has changed my life. Having a community that truly cares and I am accountable to has made a huge difference in my life and my level of fitness.

I decided in 2013 that I wanted to become a CrossFit Level 1 coach and I completed the course. It was a great experience. For me it is an honor to be able to coach and learn from an exceptional group of athletes. My goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where athletes can reach their full potential.

… I immediately noticed the sense of community and camaraderie that everyone talks about. This filled a void I’d felt…

– Jason Roberts

Growing up, basketball and running were my passions. In college, I moved to longer, more endurance-focused activities like mountain biking, road cycling, trail and road running. Then, around 2011, I became interested in running really long races on trails, and my new home of Eugene, Oregon offered the perfect opportunity to explore the mountains of Oregon and California. I also found a great group of friends with whom to run. I developed a love for rock climbing and spending time outdoors playing. I completed a 100k mountain run (Waldo 100k) and several 50-mile races during my time out west. I developed a strong aerobic engine, but began to feel bored with just running. I’ve always felt that we should seek activity that can channel our passion and provide opportunity for play, rather than feel compulsive or self-punishing, so I began to think about other options.

When I moved back to North Carolina in 2015, I started up a private therapy practice and found myself with limited time for exercise. Besides this, I noticed I felt weak and hobbled, and I decided it was time for something new to pour my passion into. A few friends who are CrossFit trainers convinced me to come to some workouts, and I immediately noticed the sense of community and camaraderie that everyone talks about. This filled a void I’d felt since leaving Oregon, and I started to feel really strong for the first time in a long while. Many of the movements (handstands, jumping rope, bar and ring work, even burpees!) felt like play. As a bonus, in just one hour, I could work on mobility, strength and get gassed in a workout. It’s just so efficient! Besides this, I’ve enjoyed the way CrossFit’s functional movements help me move through life more easily. I love the balance of friendly competition, community, and support at CrossFit Carrboro and I’m excited to be a part of the knowledgeable coaching team here.

I love the support and friendships I’ve made while being able to improve my physical self.

– Jamie Taylor

I grew up in Utah, dancing was my love and passion, and ballet was a dream. At 18 I decided to become a massage therapist to support my addiction to the arts and gained my bachelors degree in modern dance and behavioral science. In 2004 my husband and I moved out to NC for school and at that time my love of dance and culture coalesced through capoeira an Afro Brazilian martial art. Finding this bond of friendship, art and movement was and is intoxicating. But in 2010 I had a serious back injury while playing capoeira and needed a safe way to get back into movement and that is how I found CrossFit. After having my son, I started at CrossFit Carrboro in 2012, feeling immobile and with postpartum depression I desperately needed the support and companionship to get back into movement and feeling good in my body.

Crossfit Carrboro was and has been such an emotionally safe place to come and workout. It was a great way for me to rehabilitate my body and get back into shape. I love the support and friendships I’ve made while being able to improve my physical self. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as an athlete and coach. And to give back a least a fraction of the good that has been given to me.

My hope is that I will inspire other people in their 40’s and 50’s to jump in and realize that they can do this as well.

– Tim Pedersen

A native Floridian, I developed a love for working out as a teen. I did the basic workouts until I hit my 30’s – I became tired of doing the work and not really making great gains. I jumped on the Body for Life train and made a better connection between my diet and results (if only Crossfit existed then!). Three years later – on a whim and a dare, I was onstage competing in a natural bodybuilding competition in a bikini (well, posing brief) with a really bad painted on tan. I quickly realized that lifestyle was not sustainable. After some health issues, I became the occasional gym goer with no set goals and an ever increasing waistline. At a local networking meeting, the owner of a Crossfit visited and tried to explain Crossfit – rope climbing, barbells, metabolic conditioning – I quickly decided it was something I would never want to do – or be able to do. Two years later, I bought a Groupon for a Crossfit intro. I fell in love – the endorphins, the community, the changes in my fitness. Six years later, I find myself here – wanting to redefine the “Dad Bod” and what 50+ looks like. Coaching is a way for me to constantly push my own fitness and abilities. My hope is that I will inspire other people in their 40’s and 50’s to jump in and realize that they can do this as well. I am inspired daily by the hard work and effort put in by this community!

I truly believe in the CrossFit methodology and know that it has made me the strongest all-around athlete that I have ever been.

– Jill Forcina Hill

I have been competitive in sports for as long as I can remember, running road races with my Dad when I was a kid and playing soccer throughout high school and college. As I got older, I worked hard to remain active, mostly by running on the treadmill, taking group classes, and squeezing in some free weights whenever I could find the time.

It wasn’t until after the birth of my 3rd baby that I realized just how incredibly bored I was with my routine. After a lifetime of associating exercise with enjoyment, I was no longer looking forward to working out and did not have any particular goals that I was working towards. And then, through a friend, I came across CrossFit. I was intrigued, so I put together my own CrossFit-inspired workout. Needless to say, I was humbled… and hooked! Shortly after, CrossFit Carrboro opened; I became one of the first members; and I’ve never looked back!

As I continue to meddle around in other sports (some way out of my comfort zone!), I have found that CrossFit functions as the foundation of my fitness. I truly believe in the CrossFit methodology and know that it has made me the strongest all-around athlete than I have ever been. Through its focus on variation, CrossFit highlights individual strengths and improves individual weaknesses, ultimately finding the athlete in everyone. As a coach at CrossFit Carrboro, I am grateful to have the opportunity to refine that athlete in each and every member, in every workout, and share my passion for fitness and wellness with a remarkable and inspiring community.

I found that [CrossFit] was the perfect marriage of the different aspects of fitness that I enjoy

– John Buchta

Growing up I was involved with boxing, which combines elements of both strength and conditioning during training. I picked up on power lifting / Olympic lifting during college and retained various metabolic aspects in my workouts- AKA I was that guy doing burpees in the free weight area. Eventually, a friend introduced me to CrossFit and I found that it was the perfect marriage of the different aspects of fitness that I enjoy.

I love working (out) with this supportive group of people who take their own health—and each others’ health—into their own hands.

– John Buchta

I started CrossFit by way of powerlifting. I still train the power lifts and Olympic lifts in isolation but I come to CrossFit as much as I can to keep me well-rounded for the rest of my life. In all my years of physical activity, I’ve never slept better, been so free of chronic pain, or felt this connected to a community. I’m finishing my MD/MPH at UNC and love working (out) with this supportive group of people who take their own health—and each others’ health—into their own hands.
